How to Calculate GST on a Price in India

Understand GST-inclusive and GST-exclusive prices, tax components and how to use a basic GST calculator.

Goods and Services Tax (GST) is an indirect tax applied to many supplies in India. The applicable rate depends on the type of goods or services and the relevant classification. A basic GST calculator helps perform arithmetic after you know the correct rate; it does not determine the legal classification or confirm whether a transaction qualifies for a particular treatment.

Adding GST to a price

If the pre-tax price is ₹1,000 and the applicable illustrative rate is 18%, GST is ₹180 and the total is ₹1,180. The formula is:

GST amount = pre-tax amount × GST rate ÷ 100
Price including GST = pre-tax amount + GST amount

This example demonstrates the arithmetic only. Confirm the correct rate for the actual supply before issuing an invoice.

Finding the tax portion in a GST-inclusive price

If a price already includes GST, do not simply multiply the total by the rate to find the tax portion. For a single applicable rate, the tax portion can be estimated as: inclusive price × rate ÷ (100 + rate). For example, at an illustrative 18% rate, a GST-inclusive price of ₹1,180 contains ₹180 of tax and ₹1,000 before tax.

CGST, SGST and IGST

Depending on the nature and place of supply, a transaction may involve Central GST and State GST, or Integrated GST. The split is not determined by the arithmetic alone; it depends on the applicable GST rules and transaction details. Use official guidance or professional advice when preparing a real invoice.

How to use the calculator

  1. Enter the amount before GST.
  2. Select the applicable rate after verifying it.
  3. Review the tax amount and total including GST.
  4. For a tax-inclusive price, use the inclusive-price calculation rather than the add-tax method.
